Speaker

Neil Leach, Co-founder of DigitalFUTURES

Description

Everyone is talking about AI these days. But what exactly is AI? How did it evolve? And what potential does it have to influence the future? This lecture takes you on a roller coaster ride looking at the extraordinary – but often somewhat terrifying – potential of what is arguably the most significant invention of humankind. The lecture concludes that we are about to face a radically different form of intelligence – an ‘alien intelligence’ – that will far exceed human intelligence, and completely transform the discipline of architecture.

Speaker Bio

Neil Leach is an architect and professor from the UK. He currently directs the Doctor of Design program at Florida International University, and has also taught at the Architectural Association, Harvard GSD, Columbia GSAPP, Cornell, IaaC and Sci-Arc. He is the co-founder of DigitalFUTURES, an online education platform that operates in 10 languages; a former researcher for NASA, where he developed 3D printing technologies for the Moon and Mars; and a member of the Academia Europea, Europe’s leading academy with over 50 Nobel laureates. He has published over forty books on architectural theory and digital design, translated into 8 different languages and is the translator (under Joseph Rykwert) of Leon Battista Alberti, on the Art of Building in Ten Books (MIT Press 1988). Beale & Co Webinar on COVID-19

BEALE & CO WEBINAR - COVID-19: What does the future look like for construction?

Date: Wednesday 13 May at 12:30-1:30pm

Earn 1 Learning Unit at lunchtime by participating in a webinar hosted by AIA UK chapter sponsor Beale & Company

With many construction firms either already back to work or planning an imminent return amidst the current government lockdown, there are a number of issues businesses should be considering to protect their staff,  business and their projects in the future.

In this next COVID-19 webinar Partners Antony Smith and Sheena Sood will briefly recap what has happened over the last few weeks and advice given in our previous webinars, before moving on to focus on rebuilding and the future. From a legal/risk management perspective they will cover topics such as remobilisation issues, the importance of communication now more than ever and the longer term impact of COVID-19 on the construction industry.

This webinar will follow the next government announcement due on the 7 May where we expect there to be some guidance on the exit strategy for the country as a whole in relation to COVID-19. We will be drawing on any updated guidance provided during this webinar.

Places at these webinars are limited so please register as soon as possible.

Beale & Company Lunchtime Webinar - COVID-19: Mitigating Impacts

Beale & Company Lunchtime Webinar - COVID-19: Mitigating Impacts

Beale & Co. Webinar - COVID-19: Mitigating Impacts on Construction Projects

Date: Monday 30 March at 12:30-1:30pm

COVID-19 and measures taken to contain its spread have by now impacted all businesses in the UK and worldwide. As the crisis worsens the construction sector is likely to be amongst the hardest-hit. There remains uncertainty over whether construction sites are permitted to operate in light of the Government’s unprecedented restriction on people’s movements announced yesterday evening (23 March 2020) and later comments tweeted by the Communities and Housing Secretary suggesting sites can stay open where they can operate safely.

This webinar will consider the impact that the disease is likely to have on businesses and on live projects, and will provide a basic rundown of the rights and remedies that contractors and consultants are likely to have (under bespoke and all major standard-form contracts and appointments), and the steps that they should take to safeguard their positions (both contractually and from a practical perspective).

This webinar is part of a series of webinars by Beale & Co in respect of COVID-19.

Places at these webinars are limited so please register as soon as possible.

Talk: Walk on air – Brighton’s new Vertical Promenade Pier

Talk: Walk on air – Brighton’s new Vertical Promenade Pier

A new 162 metre, 21st century vertical pier has risen where the burnt out husk of Brighton’s West Pier met the promenade. Architecture and engineering have conjoined to create an astonishing feat of innovative design, engineering and technology. Hear the story behind its 12 year journey from its Architect-entrepreneurs and Chief Engineer.

The world’s tallest moving observation tower gently lifts 200 people to a height of 138 meters, offering slowly unfolding 360-degree views over Brighton and Hove, the South Downs, the South Coast and the Channel. Officially the world’s most slender tower, David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects and Dr John Roberts of Jacobs will explain the thinking behind its concept and ground-breaking, design, engineering and construction.

In 1996 the same team reinvented the Ferris wheel, focusing on the passenger experience – the result was the London Eye. British Airways i360 has redesigned and refined the same experience resulting in a visually much lighter capsule that pushes the limits of the possible. Its purpose is simply to delight, entertain and inspire, however if it has the same regenerative benefits in Brighton as the London Eye did on the south Bank, so much the better.
A canapés and drinks reception, open to all attendees, will follow the lecture.

The lecture is a joint RIBA, IStructE, AIA UK event.

1.5 CES Credits are available.

Admission is free but spaces are limited.
